Annual Meeting 2014
- Kansas City, MO
- October 5-7, 2014
- Marriott Downtown
The 2014 theme is at America’s Creative Crossroads. Higher education is at a crossroads – how we educate, how we communicate, how we budget, how we approach all aspects of higher education. We, as business officers, have to be creative in order to find our path at the crossroads.
CACUBO is excited to announce that effective December 2013 we are registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors! Our program provides an opportunity for up to 14 CPE. We are offering both a pre-conference and post-conference that each offer 3.5 additional CPE.
The Program Committee is pleased to announce four (4) general session speakers that are sure to inform, inspire and motivate our creative thinking and performance.
Our opening speaker will be Erik Wahl. Erik is an internationally recognized graffiti artist, author and entrepreneur. His on-stage painting seamlessly becomes a visual metaphor to the core of his message. He’s the Warhol of Wall Street, the Renoir of ROI, and the Picasso of Productivity. Erik uses his talents as a businessman and an artist to challenge us to change our way of thinking and increase effectiveness through innovation and superior level of performance.
Eva Bogaty, Vice President and Senior Analyst at Moody’s Investors Service, will discuss the financial and strategic challenges facing higher education in the new economy as institutions grapple with heightened competition for students, donors and government funds as well as increased regulatory challenges. She will outline issues expected to be prominent for higher education management in the near future.
Pamela Meyer is the Best-Selling Author of LieSpotting, in which she teaches how to go from lie-spotting to truth-seeking to trust-building. In her presentation “Three Patterns to Deception and a Radical Path to Truth” Pamela Meyer will provide detailed scientific findings on which personality types lie, how deception is expressed in e-mail, on the phone, and in person, and how to detect deception through body language. You will also learn about statement analysis, interviewing techniques, and about how negotiators can gain the upper hand and close deals that last, by mastering deception detection techniques.
You will not want to miss our closing speaker, J.R. Martinez. Less than a month after he was deployed to Iraq in March of 2003, J.R. was trapped inside of a burning Humvee, suffering smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34 percent of his body. His story of recovery is motivating and life-changing. You may recognize J.R. from his debuts on “Dancing with the Stars” and Lifetime’s “Army Wives” and Katie Couric’s 2011 ABC Special “The Year”. His book, Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit, is a New York Times Best Seller. J.R. Martinez is an actor, author, motivational speaker and army veteran. He will motivate and inspire with his message of resilience and optimism.
Join us Sunday evening for a mini-American Royal in the Marriott Muehlebach tower! There will be a BBQ contest, KC-themed activities, and networking opportunities! Wear your school logo items, and you are welcome to wear your cowboy boots and hats!
The content of our concurrent sessions will be focused on best practices, utilizing information technology to its fullest, expanding your professional knowledge and broadening your leadership skills. There will also be a track of Best of NACUBO which will include top-rated sessions from prior NACUBO meetings as well as a NACUBO session from their recent project on financial aid called “Looking Under the Hood”. We intend a thoughtful and purposeful curriculum for business and finance professionals within community colleges and universities of all sizes.
Our closing event is at the Midland Theatre in the Power and Light District. Judy Zimmer will help you BYOB (build your own brand)! There will be a wonderful dinner followed by activities including touring the historic theatre and enjoying some casino fun and musical entertainment!
As mentioned, the Program Committee is offering both Pre-Conference and Post-Conference seminars. The pre-conference seminar is "What's Now and What's Next? Developments in Higher Education Law" and the post-conference seminar is “Strategic View of Enterprise Risk Management”. Both session will provide an opportunity for a more in-depth look at each of these important topics.
Our 2014 Annual Meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Kansas City. Located in the heart of the business and theater districts, its nearby attractions include the Power & Light District, Sprint Center and Kauffman Center.
